Speeds runs with music, the Houdinie trick was something else! Speed, how did you get your horses ready for the NFR? I understand that preparation starts in the practice pen, but how do you replicate the Thomas&Mack, 17,000 rodeo fans, and loud music and announcers while you are trying to rope? May healing come your way and you are able to be back at 110%. Thankyou be blessed.

In one of your videos you mentioned that when your dad was training heel horses he liked steers turned in the first 40 or 50 feet of the arena. I was just curious as to why.

Loved the latest two vids, answered two of my biggest questions. One last question and this may not be the right place to discuss so if not just let me know and I will contact you however you would like or feel free to contact me however you prefer. I know you have mentioned that you do schools at your house and I have read great reviews from some of your students. I would like to get some details from you about that and see what is involved to get down there and have you help me out a little. Have been roping a long time but really want to get up to the next level and beyond. Thanks again

Quick question, what is your rule of thumb on when to hold on to the saddle horn coming out of the box and when not too. I assume it is all about how flat your horse is leaving the box and how long the score is as well as how fast you need to be. But want to know for sure what you think. thanks

Just wanted to say thanks for posting all the short rounds for Kirby's roping, Circle T, and all the others. I'm in North Dakota working, for what will be a year next week, and it sure helps to be able to watch what's going on back home !! I try to fly home (Barry, Tx)around the big ropings but sometime just can't get away. I came in for the Waco reginals but had to draw out because of back trouble. Anyway, thanks for helping keep me up to "Speed", pardon the pun !he-he I also enjoy watching Jen and the kids as they progress along. I have a guy up here that mounts me and have got to go to some of the Wrangler ropings, but it's just not the same as being home roping with Tuley, Shane, Willis, and all the rest of the gang. Hope to see you when I get in, maybe head one for Jen !

If you dont think that Speed is devoted to making this website better, just take a look at the time at which he posted that last comment. Thats burning the midnight oil. If he had a baby that he had to get up with, like I do, i wouldnt be that impressed, but he starts before daylight and quits... well you can see for yourself. That is not wanting or talking about being better, that is actually doing what it takes to be a winner. That is what separates he and Clay O, Jake, Joe B, Cody Ohl, Rich, Al Bach and all of the rest of those old pros from the guys that started at the same time they did. The old vets didn't dominate when they fisrt started like all of these kids expect to do. They became dominant when they became willing to change and progress. Leo Camarillo changed the way people heeled steers and dominated. Clay O took it one step further and dominated. Tee Woolman was one of the original bombers, dominated. Speed took it one step further with the superior cattle handling which is afforded by having his horses more broke and having better control. The game has changed people and this man is letting everyone that wants to know how to change with it. For those of you who say that you can't afford it, I bet you guys still go to a jackpot whenever there is one close. It costs less to join this site than it takes to enter a jackpot. Granted, Speed is not going to call your name out so that all of your friends and neighbors can watch when you chase one. Why dont you all SPEND THE TIME and the little bit of money it takes to learn from the greatest header of all time. If you do, I promise you that you will start hearing your name called more often, more in the short round and not just in the first round. Anyone can enter, only those who work at will win on a cosistent basis. Thanks for the use of this soap box, yall have a good day and God bless you.

Speedy just got the DVD Power Drill wih you and Ricky Green from your mom,can not wait to try some of the drills on practice night. I did not realize how many drills there were, even though we have been roping the HOT HEELS for a long time. Many times we simpley warm up on the hot heals then go diectly to live cattle. After watching this video i hope we will do much more drill work before going to live cattle. I think it will be a win-win for both us and our horses.Must tell you i have thoroughly enjoyed your webb site, you have been very active and timely with your postings and that gives me some excellent insight as to why some runs fail to turn out like we want them to.good luck at the jackpots rodeos

To the comment that Dale Davis made, I agree with him. It gives a different aspect on what is going on during a run. There are so many things going on at the same time that are executed in just a few short seconds. So with that said. Speed, have you or would you ever consider maybe filming a few practice runs from the box? The site is awesome and i've learned alot. I didn't start roping until a few months ago,and having the convience of an 8 time world champion as my teacher is something that I never thought would happen.

The video titled 'partners' is an excellent display on how to get the neck. It has a different camera angle than the new videos that are filmed at Speed's house in De Leon. You can see the angle of the swing and delivery on a variety of different cows, distances, and angles. Also gives an inside look on how much dedication it takes to stack eight worlds champion saddles up in eight years. It is also a good vid for the heelers who are trying to step it up by practicing on those muleys too.

Hey Speedy, this is Rocky we were at First Baptist Church Llano at the same time I was the youth and activities minister. I am loading up on the videos and working on applying the play by play in the practice pen. I am trying to make a transition from roping right horn left horn to roping both horns at the same time. I am also struggling with consistenly catching mulies or steers with head trick issues that I want to rope around the neck. Do you have any video suggestions or thoughts on these issues. Hali and Gabe are perfect examples of how the proper type of training can help. Some parents just put their kids on a horse and say go rope. Some go out and buy training videos for all different types of sports,Your site is the perfect training site, this is better than a one time video to watch over and over again. This is like having your own private trainer,Also it shows the importance of being able to see you and your horse after a training session.Football teams saw the importance of filming practice many years ago its now time ropers do the same thing not just at a roping but at practice.

Good Afternoon Speed. Could you post a video or videos on different ways to hold(grip between fingers) your reings with your left hand and the appropriate length in reference to the saddle horn and why . Also bit and tiedown combinations and lenghts best suited for heel horses so that they can really get on the horse like LC. I know that that information is readily available anywhere, but that is why I'm a member because I value your information and experience. Thank you

I met Speed a few months ago at a gathering in Palo Pinto. He was doing a short clinic at the 4F arena on roping and horsemanship. As it turns out one of the people chosen to rope (so Speed could pick them apart) had a horse doing exactly what my horse was doing, kicking his butt out every time he was ready to rope. Speed got on the horse and in a matter of 10 min had the horse setting in the corner. It took me a little longer but I finally got my box problems (and a couple other problems on rating that he talks abou on the website) fixed.
Short story: without Speed’s help I would have never been able to take this horse to a jackpot. I have been a member since early spring and have enjoyed this new method of learning how to improve my roping skills. BTW, if you watch the Lloyd South Number 10 short go on Speed’s website, I am the 2nd high team header that won the #10 on the horse that many said I should give up on. Thanks Speed.

Most of the people I know enter a roping to win and that is the driving force to make us practice, travel and enter. We work hard all week, stay involved in kid and family activities then practice when we can because it’s our form of recreation and an outlet for our desire to compete. Roping is a curious thing and, like golf, it’s a sport that offers constant challenge, frustration, reward and satisfaction. For most of us roping is a sideline to our full-time profession so there is a constant struggle to maximize the quality and effectiveness of our practice as we fit it in between many other life priorities.
Through the years the primary sources for learning and improving have been to attend a roping school, read an article, watch a video or hire the best roper we know for a little coaching. These are all viable teaching and learning methods though, with the evolution of technology, it is inevitable that new and creative ideas come along. Team roping is a hands-on sport which makes it difficult for the professionals to devise new, innovative and creative methods to deliver their teaching material but, with the amount of windshield time involved in the sport, it was only a matter of time before someone broke the mold.
Speed Williams has long made a name for himself with his creative and innovative approach to the art of team roping. I am not the least bit surprised that he is the man to devise a teaching and instructional method that suits his personal style and family priorities, yet offers roping junkies like myself constant access to tips and information that are challenging, entertaining and effective. I am convinced that SpeedRoping.com is one of the best ideas the roping industry has enjoyed since..... the four-strand rope or Hot Heels.
What’s the big deal? With an extensive and growing video library it is up to us as the user to decide what we want to watch, study and learn at any given time. If you have a little down-time and want to “chill” and be entertained, you can catch up on the latest with Speed and Jen’s kids. Want to study horsemanship? There are lots of resources on riding, training and tuning on your horse. Have a particular aspect of your roping you want to work on? There are numerous videos of Speed heading or Clay O’ heeling - you pick. The choices are endless.
Not too long ago I saw an interview with Kobe Bryant where he talked about the hundreds of hours of video he watches as part of his approach to becoming a better player. This wasn’t just video of today’s great players but footage of the great players from 30 and 40 years ago. He has tremendous respect for “the game” and players from all generations and knows the value of visual learning and incorporating it in his daily practice routine. This method of learning is as effective for the team roper as it is for one of the best basketball players of all time and Speed Williams understands this concept.
I have been competing for 35 years and consider myself a student of the sport, yet I am not satisfied with certain aspects of my roping. SpeedRoping.com is the resource I have needed to start learning again at a level I’ve not had in many years. I have a new energy for the sport I love and, in a short time, can feel results in my roping and horsemanship which I attribute to the learning environment on Speed’s website. I highly encourage any roping enthusiast to check out SpeedRoping.com and sign up for the hottest new thing in team roping!

Speed, Need a liitle advise on facing my horse. I know he is not hurting anywhere and my saddle isn't hurting him; I tried 2 different saddles. With a steer in tow, he wants to only face 1/4 to 1/3 of the way. I can drag my rope and he will face correctly and even drag a light log and he faces easily. Last night in practice I started just undallying when my heeler caught; face him, back him up a couple of steps, when pet him to give him relief. I was told I could have created a habit of not fully facing to save practice steers along with trying to save my rope from dragging. By not stopping my horse and riding off to the the stripping chute, the horse didn't get relief until he reached the stripping chute. Last night was the first night I've tried undallying, backing him up a couple of steps and rubbing on him. I've had the horse about 9 months and he's getting worse about the facing. Can you offer any advise? Love the website, but it keeps me away from my work! Thanks Charlie Mathis Amarillo,Tx

I went to a wrangler #4 roping saturday and was all confident ready to rope. Well the steers were so slow that every time one was turned for me my horse would over run them run into them and my swing I am assuming was slowing down because the steers were slow and hitting the right flank and falling down. It was very depressing and embarassing I went back to the sawhorse and worked on getting the bottom strand on the ground. Is there anything else I can practice to be prepared in a month for the same roping and steers.

When you analyze your wife's roping it would be nice to have you comment a little on the handle. I am struggling a bit with heelers not catching for me and I think it must be my handle because they are catching for others. The problem is I hear a lot of different things about handling steers and so I'm not sure what a good handle looks like. My heelers tell me I am giving them a good handle but maybe they don't recognize the difference either.

It is on the list but I believe roping the hot heels moving slow is the best drill so they learn to watch the legs when throwing their rope. I am shooting the commercial for Fox Sports this week so it might be a little bit still. I am going to show what drills I have my wife doing too but have her watch Hali on the hot heels videos for now. With putting up these short rounds of the ropings have had me pretty busy.

Well John I tried calling you but had a bad phone number. I am sorry 65 dollars is high to you but have you ever done the math on what you spend trying to rope a month. It is 2 dollars a day for advice on how to do things to improve your roping at home and when you leave home. I have spent years learning from mistakes and failures on what not to do. This is a total new way of teaching but it cost me quite a bit of money to build this plus staff. I started out telling people there would be three stages to building the Library of videos. One steer that you could catch from all the advice will pay for your subscription. I am sorry I can not do it for free but the world does not work that way as you know it takes money to be able to do anything. I am building it for people who want to get better and not go through all the mistakes that I made to get where you can win. Team Roping is an expensive sport to get into because you can spend 500 dollars to 2000 dollars in entry fees (per weekend) not to mention all the other expensive things that go with it like a truck, trailer, horse, feed, saddle, tack, ropes. So for 65 dollars a month or a dollar a day for a year. You can learn how to do things the way that was successful for me. I wish all of you the best of luck with your roping remember if you are not prepared when you leave home there is a good chance you are not going to win.

Speed, have you thought about offering a shorter period of watching videos for a certain rate, like a 24hr fee or something where you try to get previous members to subscribe again even if it is for a short while. For some people in todays time $50 a month is a lot of money. Just wondering.

You made a comment about your wife having trouble with her delivery not getting the rope under the cow. I believe this is also a big problem that i have. I had to retire my 16 hand horse and i am now roping on a 14 hand horse. I have had a lot of problems getting my rope under the cow instead of hitting the ground to the right. What kind of drills would you suggest for this problem?

Thanks for the stopping video. It makes perfect sense that the horse needs to stop at different times, depending on how close I am to the steer. The first question that came to me was that if I had a finished horse and I threw from further back, he would stop before my rope hit the legs, causing me to miss. After thinking about it, I think that once I get a finished horse, either he will normally run to the correct spot or I will have improved enough to change my delivery to compensate. Is this correct?

Thanks for the stopping of a heel horse video. Its nice to see the detailed teaching. Many times we know what is wanted of our horse, but we are unsure of what, when, and where to ask him. The insights to your mind, legs, and hands are great.

I am a beginner roper and just started roping 2 months ago. I watch every video and some videoes several times, and then go and try to execute what I have learned. I am a visual learner and this is the perfect thing for me. Speed, thanks for letting us in on your world and practice pen to see how things are suppose to be done, and done with saftey. I feel that I'm ahead of the game by far with the information you provide. Keep up the good work. A membership is well worth it. Personally I think a man or women could go out, and win a roping or a rodeo for the amount of money it takes for a membership pretty quick with the information provided on the website.

My advice is right here on the website. There are a lot of tips on how to ride a young heel horse. So my answer would be go to a school or buy a membership because there is a whole lot you need to work on before you mess up your young horse.Chris for you to have a young horse and you have been only trying to rope for year that is very hard for you both to improve. I sure hope you have a Hot Heels.

i went to a roping today. This is the second roping i have been to since i have been to speeds house. I went back in my mind to what I was told to do at his house. You know learning something new is hard to do when old habits set in. If you are a roper you know what i mean about habits!!!!!!! I went back to what he told me to do.I thought about my right stirrup being taken away from me. I pictured speed sitting on the fence telling me dont lean,,,dont lean.... It didnt start out so great, but in the end once i got back to reality of what i was taught at his house,,,, i won the roping!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the best thing i have ever been told and taught how to do... Learn from a CHAMPION,,,, be a CHAMPION..... Plain and simple........

You just asked about that the other day will get some old steers and make one. Dale I am behind on my list to do just wish I was faster at all the stuff behind the scenes. I have to spend some time each week watching tutorials on different stuff just to learn how to do new stuff. I am working on being able to draw lines on stuff. All I am saying will try to always have something new ever day but it does take quite a bit of work to get this done. Remember this is not what I have spent my whole life doing but I am learning on the go. I would never get any videos done if I started answering question on the comment page. I have to have a big horn low headed steer to do a video on it.

I need some advice about roping low headed, big horned steers. I know the sure fire way is to get em around the throat but, when they have big flat horns, it seems like it is just as hard to get the neck as it is to rope the horns. I have medium plus range and dont mind them going right or coming left if it will help me get a chance at them with their head up. Havent found a video, may not be looking in the right place. Any help will be appreciated.

But to be honest, what I love and enjoy the most is how you include and show your love for your family. In my eyes this makes you a world champion. My kids are grown and gone, but I love how my wife supports my roping and is in the arena with me everytime I'm roping. Thanks again and I hope to make a school with you soon.

Speed,After watching Wesleys video I am more confused about roping both horns at the same time.I attended one of David Jones clinics about 5 years ago .We worked on attacking the steer from above and roping both horns at the same time. Now I miss alot or split the horns when I get too close. If I ride really wide I hardly ever miss. How do I break this habit?

Speed, thanks for voicing over a video about the Fastlane. I never really understood why they were so against the little dummy that we had around and roped when we were kids. I have been going to build one like what we had growing up for my son, but I'm going to look into just buying one. I like the idea of having real horns to rope rather than the PVC horns we roped on the old one.

I know we can see it at the events, but those are on you good horses and your not working or fixing them at a competition. I wanted to see Justin's horse compared to your's. I have a question regarding the Fast Lane Dummy. I didn't really start roping on a horse until I was 24. When I was a kid my cousins and I roped something very similar to that. The question I have is I remember at some point someone saying it taught the heeler bad habits. What is your opinion on that. I really like that it has a full set of horns on it I think that's pretty good practice.

This is Kelly Tuley. I took my son and i over to Speeds house on Saturday. I have to honestly say my son in one trip over there is a more mental roper than he used to be. He is only 11. Watching his self on video made him see what he was doing wrong. This was the greatest experience that i could ever have offered or givin to him. I owe it all to the man. Speedy.!!!That was the greaest practice that i have ever been to.. All you ropers that read this, you can keep going to the practices at the house. Keep going to the jackpots to fix your problems. You will spend more money doing this than you will at a school with the man!!!! I encourage that if you want to get better, you need to go this. Become a member, go to the schools and become a champion.. I went, I became a member, it has paid off for me..Thanks Speedy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've really learned quite a bit since I've been on this site, and thank you for that. I know this question will come up several times, but do you have a good tip on dally practice for a heeler. I don't practice dallying on live cattle a lot due to the number of steers we have. Also one other question, I've been trying to film some runs to breakdown myself, and would like any tips on what angles work the best for filming a heeler and their delivery.

I got a heeling question for you. I been roping 2 feet pretty consistantly and have chosen not to tie on, but when I go to the horn there's nothing there. And when I do hold up and let it come tight then go to the horn I am at the end of my rope and panic then lose my rope. I guess my question is do I order me a tie on and tie on, or keep practicing until I get it down.

Can you list the videos by categories such as heeling practice ,heading practice, speeds jackpot runs ,dummy roping. On the hot heels DVD the session are listed 1 through 17 and if you want to review one item you better have a better memory than mine.
Thanks Blake Hawkins DVM

I like the idea of the site and would like to access certain videos. It would be cool if we could pay to view certain videos instead of paying one fee for all the videos. Is that possible or is it just wishful thinking..

Your video's are great. Who ever takes them does a great job. My question is where do they stand and is your video on a tri-pod. When I have my wife stand at the back of arena or in the re-turn lane to video it either scares the cow or the picture doesn't get both ropers.

I love the Hot Heels, through your videos and the HH I have made improvement in both my horse and me. I would like to see some horsemanship videos I mean is it all done roping or do you practice that butt in the ground stop in other ways. I guess what I’m asking is their more to your training than just the HH. Culpepper gave a school at Clarksville and loped his black horse to the right in a left lead with the nose turned in, he said it took hours of practice to accomplish this but insured that his horse would stay in the left without crossfire. Is there riding technique that you do to improve your horse that doesn’t involved a HH. Thank you for the web site. I paid $300.00 for a 2 day school and I was running on fumes by the second day my shoulder hurt for two weeks due to the 10 hours of constant work I’ve been to many school on both horsemanship and roping but being able to work at my own pace instead of a 20 hour push works a lot better for me. I believe the home school rather then the public school is a good option for me. Thanks Blake Hawkins DVM

Speed,
I’ve been roping calves for about 7 years and I’ve been wanting to team rope for a while, but I’m a broke college student so it wasn’t possible to go buy a finished head horse. So, I found me a nice gelding, spent about 6 months getting him real broke and sent him to a friend of mine for a couple of months to start on cattle. I’ve been real consistent roping calves for a while now, if I’m in position I rarely miss one. So I figured there’s nothing to heading, I don’t have any problems catching. Haha, I quickly found out it’s not that easy, my swing and delivery had to totally change, not to mention dallying and how to handle steers. When I got my horse back he was still pretty green and didn’t have much rate. I’ve had him back about 4 months now and have been roping the sled on him almost every day. I get to rope live cattle 1-2 times a week, not nearly much as I would like. I go to school in eastern North Carolina and rope pen’s are few and far between. The people that do rope are not nearly as committed as people in the western part of the state and other areas. I’ve got a rope pen back home but I can’t build one on the Reining Farm I live on so I’ve got a homemade heelomatic I get to practice on. I’ve finally found an old rope pen that they’re going to let me put some steers at not too far from the house so I’m really pumped about that. Were both starting to get more consistent and I’ve just started going to roping’s here in the last few weeks. This weekend I finally made it back to the short go 3 times in the #8 and #10. Well, what I’m really emailing for is to say thanks for starting your website. There are not many people to get help from down here so before your site I’ve been studying a lot of YouTube videos and videos of me roping. I’ve been following your tips now for several months and its paying off. After this weekend I’ve got a few things to work on that I think will improve my game for next weekend. I’m looking forward to new videos and now that I’ve got somewhere to rope consistent I think my roping is fixing to get more consistent as well. Thanks again, Langdon Pleasant

Wow Jenn, you really gained swing speed in the corner on second steer right before delivery. That was really awesome! Tough luck on the third steer though. That steer looked like a real pup and the header got out great...looked to me like. Good Job JENN!!!

Horse worked awesome on the first steer at the BFI. That steer came into you slightly and then went back right and your horse stayed up in the shoulders and without total control of your horse like you had it makes for a wild shot on the heel end. Without the proper swing when that steer does that, you either miss the right horn or wave it off. Your students can learn lots on that run right there. You were in total control and looked prepared.

Speed, I just want to thank you for all your doing with your site. I have been struggling along heading for quite some time now, even a clinic and school or two has not helped that much. After getting a subscription to your site and reviewing all your videos over and over, I have seen a great improvement in my roping. My husband and son, both heelers, also watch and follow your drills and their results too are awesome!
I really think as more and more people use your site, team roping is going to get tougher! This has opened a door to learning and improving your roping like no one has ever seen!
Thanks again! Were so glad you have done this! The LaRue Family

This is great being able to see the runs of our son Dean roping with you at the Reno Rodeo so soon after the event. We're excited about tomorrow's BFI. Best of Luck.
I am nearly finished writing a screenplay about a young boy from the city who comes to the ranch and learns to team rope. Guess who's in the script - Speed Williams! He comes to give a school. I will get it to you soon for your critique.

Your site is simply brilliant Speed. What a way to take your craft and share your expertise with everyone in such a unique way. This site is a tremendous vehicle to reach so many people and share your wealth of knowledge.
Excellent work, you should be very proud. Way to be a true pioneer.
